If you’ve ever held your breath underwater, you can freedive.
Freedive Renaissance
Prince George's County, Maryland
Freediving is often misunderstood as something extreme or reserved for a certain type of person. In reality, it’s one of the most natural ways to move through water. At its core, freediving is about learning how to slow down, relax, and work with your body instead of fighting it.Many people come to freediving because snorkeling feels limiting, or because they want a more direct, fluid way to explore underwater spaces. What surprises most beginners is how quickly freediving stops being about “holding your breath” and starts being about comfort, awareness, and ease. With the right guidance, breath-holding becomes secondary, and movement and presence take over.Freediving teaches you how to use your whole body to move calmly and efficiently through water. It builds confidence by helping you understand what you’re already capable of. Each session is an opportunity to feel more at home in the water, to build trust in yourself, and to experience a sense of freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere.Learning to freedive doesn’t require a certain background, body type, or experience level—just curiosity and a willingness to learn. From there, the right structure and support make all the difference.
Freedive Renaissance is a small, independent freediving school created to make freediving feel accessible, safe, and genuinely welcoming. It’s built on the belief that—beyond pushing limits or chasing numbers—freediving is about learning to feel at home in the water.Instruction is led by a triple-certified freediving instructor who understands what it’s like to start from curiosity rather than confidence. Classes are intentionally small, safety-first, and paced to support real learning. At its core, Freedive Renaissance exists to create space for people who haven’t always seen themselves represented in aquatic sports, and for anyone who wants to explore the water with curiosity, respect, and care.

What We Offer
Freedive Renaissance offers freediving instruction and certifications designed to help adults build comfort, confidence, and skill in the water at their own pace and in a supportive environment.Offerings include:
Pool-based and open-water depth freediving training
International freediving certifications (AIDA & Molchanovs)
One-on-one coaching (equalization, technique, breath-hold skills)
Small-group and private instruction
We work with adults who are curious about freediving and want to feel more at home in the water. Many students come in with little or no freediving experience, and that’s perfectly okay.Training is safety-focused, beginner-friendly, and paced to meet each student where they are.

Because freediving is deeply connected to natural conditions, training is offered seasonally. Pool-based sessions and open-water training take place during the warmer months, when water temperatures and visibility allow for safe, comfortable learning. This seasonal approach allows each course to be taught intentionally, without rushing or forcing conditions, thus creating a better experience for students and a calmer learning environment overall.Training and certification courses are typically offered between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. During this time, students can participate in pool-based training as well as open-water depth sessions at Lake Phoenix in Virginia.Outside of the active training season, prospective students are encouraged to join the interest list to be notified when new course dates are released.
If you’re curious about freediving and want to explore whether it might be a good fit for you, you’re welcome to fill out the Interest Form. The form helps me learn a bit about your background, comfort in the water, and what you’re hoping to get out of freediving. That way, when courses open for the season, I can share options that actually make sense for you. There’s no commitment and no pressure. It’s simply a way to stay connected and start the conversation.
